How to Accurately Hate AI

If you're going to hate AI, you need to understand it.

I want you to channel your hatred of AI more specifically

I’m loving the ire behind taking down tech billionairs. Trust me. But where we are losing effectiveness is by the broad strokes we claim across the entire thing. That’s why I think we need to drill down a bit so you are more able to talk shit as needed. ai hierarchy

The general overview of AI (as told as simply as possible)

1) AI is the umbrella term for everything you’ll see below
2) Machine Learning: a type of AI that teaches computers to learn patterns fromn data
3) Large Language Models (LLMs): This is where the tech overlords come into play. Each of the tech companies is essentially responsible for an LLM. These LLMs is the foundation for what comes next and is why and how different AI applications can create bias. Essentially, the tools that come from each company’s LLM will carry the bias of that company (e.g. Google’s LLM is better at photo editing because of the data they have from Google Photos, or why Grok [Elon Musk’s model] always ends up being racist)
4) AI Applications: This is a use case in itself but it’s the tools that use these LLMs. GPT stands for Generative Pretrained Transformer. Each of these is a GPT. ChatGPT just has it in the name.
5) The Use Cases: This is where I want you to pinpoint your hate. The use cases for these LLMs can be good. In the medical field, AI has the bandwidth and computing power to analyze brain scans, identify bone fractures, and detect diseases ealier. But in a very human-driven field, say art and strategy, it can lead to generic and bland ideas, or straight up cheating. Essentially, AI slop.

So what specifically do you hate?

Hoping you now understand a little more about the industry as a whole, I want to drill down and do some root cause analysis.

  • If you hate AI slop, generative art and music, ESPECIALLY for the sake of profit, I think you hate the user for choosing it and hate the specific tech companies/billionaires for making it so readily available as a resource
  • If you hate how much companies are trying to shove this down your throat without any real knowledge or insight on how to actually apply it then you hate capitalism and the tech companies specifically for trying to 1-up each other
  • If you hate how data centers are displacing at-risk communities, or the energy resources it consumes, you hate the tech companies and the banks that are investing billions of dollars into these things knowing that the $60 Billion they invested could solve world hunger tomorrow.
  • If you hate the emotional dependency people are building about a large language model either by falling in love with a chatbot or using it to cheat at school, then you hate the systems at play that fail to educate society, develop critical thinking skills, and build communities.

What I hate

What I hate is capitalism. All roads lead to capitalism. Unfortunately, I see the good AI can do, but I also see the failings of society (see last bullet above). I see how this tool is going to widen the wealth/knowledge gap, and we can probably point out what that means for politics, the environment, science, etc.

Unfortunately, if people dug deep enough, I don’t think any one can say they actually fully hate AI as an overall umbrella. It’s just easy to do. There are good use cases out there, and probably like how people who worked in the oil industry felt, these companies are also offering the largest salaries across all the available jobs today and if you can get a job, this money is actually life changing.

That being said, being more educated about AI has helped me clarify my complex feelings behind such a dynamic industry and has helped me feel more in control with so much change. Now that you know what’s under the hood of “AI,” let me know what you hate!
